Sample:

The line graph illustrates the number of store closures and openings in a particular country over the course of 8 years starting from 2011.

Overall, what stands out from the graph is that the numbers of shops closed down and opened both fluctuated significantly with a downward trend over the period. Another significant feature is although the number of new shops exceeded that of defunct retailers in the first year, there were more stores that ceased to exist by the end of the period.

Regarding the number of shop openings, it stood at around 8,500 in 2011 before declining sharply by more than a half to a low of 4000 in 2012. In the next 2 years, there was a considerable recovery in the number of shops opened before the figure dipped again to its 2012 mark. Following this, it remained relatively stable until 2017 and dropped slightly to 3000 in the final year.

A similar pattern can be seen in the number of shops that went bankrupt. In the first 4 years of the period, the figure oscillated between 6000 and just over 7000 shops. Having plummeted to a trough of approximately 500 stores in 2015, the figure increased ten-fold to about 5000 stores in 2016 and hovered around this number until the end of the period.
